Job Description

Your Team: The Sun is the most popular newsbrand in the UK, reaching 38.2 million people a month across digital and print. The Sun is at the heart of the nation’s conversation, blending serious investigations, agenda-setting campaigns, political scoops and celebrity gossip. More than a newspaper. The Sun is an instigator, an entertainer, a cultural reference point, a finger on the pulse, a daily relationship. We have a talented, diverse team who publish the best coverage of news, sport, lifestyle and showbiz in print and digital.

Your Role:

As a member of the backbench within the integrated newsroom, you will play a crucial role in the daily production, tone and design of The Sun and The Sun on Sunday.

You will act as a key link between editorial desks and print execution, conceiving and producing brilliant pages for the newspaper while also having input into the wider agenda and digital products.

This role requires an experienced production journalist who can confidently bring sparkle to Sun pages, support the Night Editor and sometimes take the helm of the edition, ensuring the brand's signature high-impact storytelling is carried across print and digital platforms.

The role involves a seven-day rota pattern, working evenings and regular weekend shifts.

Day to day you will:

  • Collaborate with the news and picture desks, sub-editors and art desk to create visually striking pages, write snappy, agenda-setting headlines, and maintain flawless copy standards under tight deadlines.

  • Suggest story treatments, design tricks and splash ideas to the Night Editor.

  • Revise and send pages for publication, meticulously checking the tone, layout and headlines on each story, while always adhering to copyflow timings to keep print production on track.

  • Work closely with the advertising team to strategically position ad placements, ensuring compliance with placement guidelines.

  • Liaise with the Heads of News and Pictures to maximise the impact of stories online and in video.

  • Serve as a line of defence for media law and regulatory compliance, ensuring all headlines and copy strictly adheres to Contempt and Libel law, IPSO standards and the Editors’ Code of Practice.

What we are looking for from you:

  • Experience in a senior production role (such as Chief Sub-Editor, Night Editor, or other middle bench or back bench position) within a fast-paced national or major regional press environment, with exposure to digital publishing and video production.

  • Knowledge of newspaper production software (e.g. InDesign, Methode) and a practical understanding of edition planning.

  • Exceptional skills in headline writing and page design, and a sharp eye for identifying and legalling high-risk stories under intense deadline pressure.

  • Authoritative knowledge of media law and the IPSO Editors' Code of Practice.

  • Proven ability to make high-stakes editing decisions quickly and calmly, and thrive in a rolling, seven-day news operation.
